Mobile Devices and the Military: Useful Tool or Significant Threat?
ABSTRACT
Smart mobile devices are becoming more prevalent in the military, not only for personal use, but as a battlefield tool. This paper discusses the introduction of smart mobile phones into a military environment, and the possible benefits and risks thereof. The paper will also investigate what these devices mean for information warfare. Throughout the paper, specific examples will be provided of military application of mobile devices, and the threats they pose.

Dr. Brett van Niekerk is a senior lecturer in information technology at the Durban University of Technology. He serves as chair for the International Federation of Information Processing Working Group on ICT in Peace and War, and is the co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Cyber Warfare and Terrorism. He has numerous years of information/cybersecurity experience in both academia and industry and has contributed to the ISO/IEC information security standards. In 2012, he graduated with his PhD focusing on information operations and critical infrastructure protection. He is also holds a MSC in electronic engineering and is CISM certified.

Manoj Maharaj (PhD) is an Associate Professor in the School of Management, IT and Governance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. An Applied Mathematician, Maharaj initially specialized in the Theory of General Relativity where he has published several research papers, culminating in research on gravitational radiation. Recently Maharaj has concentrated on his research in Information Systems, specializing in Information Security and other emerging information technologies, including web 2.0 and ICT for development (ICT4D). He has successfully supervised many postgraduate students in Information Systems and published extensively with his students. In addition to his extensive teaching and research experience Maharaj consults widely, presenting workshops and lectures on various subjects within the realm of Information Systems.
