AUGUST 2014

June was a tough month for the Information Warfare world.

I am sad to announce that we lost Dr. Dan Kuehl to an aggressive form of cancer. An innovative and early advocate of IW, he was a long-term professor at the National Defense University in Washington, DC, who developed and taught strategic-level Information Operations (IO) classes starting in the late 1990s. In this role, he taught thousands of senior-level officers and officials on the greater role that information can play in military and civil operations and missions. In the process, he coined the acronym DIME for Defense, Information, Military, and Economic when discussing the elements of power, and his moniker was “To Inform is to Influence”. A true believer in the future of IO in the DoD, Dan was always a leader in this realm. His death is a true loss to our community.

The staff of JIW would like to dedicate this issue to his memory.

Looking ahead, we want to remind our readers of a number of outstanding academic conferences that are coming up in the near future:

  • The Australians are hosting the SRI Security Congress, in Perth, Australia, on 1-3 December 2014 (http://conferences.secau.org/). This event hosts five different security-based conferences over these three days, including
    • 5th Australian Information Warfare Conference
    • 12th Australian Information Security Management Conference
    • 12th Australian Digital Forensics Conference
    • 7th Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
    • 3rd Australian e-Health Informatics and Security Conference

All submissions are double-blind peer reviewed, and the best papers will be considered for publication in selected journals. The Paper Submission Deadline is 31 August 2014.

  • Go on a Safari next year. The ICCWS will be heading to South Africa in the world famous Kruger National Park on 24-25 March 2015 (http://academic-conferences.org/iccws/iccws-home.htm). See the announcement regarding this conference following the Authors section of this issue.
  • The 14th European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security ECCWS-2015, will be hosted by the The University of Hertfordshire, in Hatfield, UK on 2-3 July 2015 (http://academic- conferences.org/eccws/eccws2015/eccws15-home.htm).

These conferences are pretty regular in terms of the time periods during which they take place: i.e., first week of December in Australia, late March for the International event, and the first week in July in Europe. If you have not had a chance to attend one of these conferences, please take time to do so. You will enjoy it immensely, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Cheers,

Dr. Leigh Armistead, CISSP, CDFE
