A Cultural Exploration of Social Media Manipulators

Abstract:

Internet social media sites enable the rapid and widespread production and dissemi- nation of propaganda. Although propaganda has a long history in warfare, the spreading of propaganda via social media is markedly different from past distribution methods. The authors investigated the relationships between state-affiliated actors who use social media to produce and distribute propaganda and their national cultural values.

Hofstede’s Cultural Markers in Successful Victim Cyber Exploitations

Abstract:

Hofstede, Hofstede, and Minkov (2010) observed that culture acts as “software of the mind”. These authors have written that culture influences behaviour and motivation for behaviour. This phenomenon may also be connected to underlying behaviours that inadvertently lead to successful exploitation. The current study was undertaken in order to determine if a statistical relationship exists between culture and successfully exploited government and military websites housed in victim countries.

Culture and Cyber Behaviours: DNS Defending

ABSTRACT

The Domain Name System (DNS) provides the Internet mapping information that many applications rely on for proper functioning. DNS software is a popular and potent attack vector. Many DNS attacks can be prevented through the adoption of DNS security extensions (DNSSEC). DNSSEC provides assurance of data authenticity (Arends et al. 2005). Even though DNSSEC standard has been in place over a decade, adoption has remained uneven; therefore, cultural values and DNSSEC adoption and rejection rates were examined in this study. The findings reveal activity in several dimensions, thus, implying that DNSSEC behaviours and cultural values may be co-related.
