Anonymity Enhancing Technologies (AET): Opportunities and Threats

ABSTRACT

Privacy of Web surfers nowadays is frequently compromised by eavesdroppers. The threat applies to surfers’ identities, the World Wide Web (hereafter: the Web) site being browsed, and their association. This article provides a comprehensive review of AET for the Web. First, the article examines the nature of threats to anonymity. Next, theoretical and practical solutions for protecting surfers’ anonymity are presented and their capabilities are extracted. The solutions are then analyzed and mapped with regards to their performance and the degree of anonymity they cater for. The analysis clearly demonstrates the inherent trade-off between performance and anonymity provided by AET.

Catch Me If You Can: Cyber Anonymity

ABSTRACT

Advances in network security and litigation have empowered and enabled corporations to conduct Internet and desktop surveillance on their employees and customers, while Governments have spent billions to monitor cyberspace to include entering agreements with corporations to provide surveillance data on adversarial groups, competitors, and citizenry (Reuters, 2010).  Although the initial intent of network and Internet monitoring may be honourable; terrorists, hackers, and cyber-criminals already have access to the necessary tools and methodologies to continue in their activities unabated.  This paper will demonstrate a step-by-step case study using a ‘paranoid’ approach to remaining anonymous using only open-source tools.

Protecting E-mail Anonymity with an Anonymizer Bouncer

ABSTRACT

Communication between people has always been a part of society. In the past, people could omit the return address from a letter to keep the sender’s identity private. The problem is that it is not as easy to achieve anonymity when sending and receiving e-mails. This paper discusses ways of achieving anonymity when using e-mail as communication for instance, in lodging complaints to a grievance department. Anonymity is defined as hiding the identity and personal information of an individual. The proposed model uses an anonymous re-mailer to show how the sender of an e-mail’s identity can remain anonymous.
